Doggystyle -- Snoop Dogg

A subtle step up from Dre's nearly classic, "The Chronic." From beginning to end, Dre's West Coast beats, Snoop's smooth rhymes, and a guest list a mile long, make this the classic hip hop album. It is playable anytime, anywhere. And I often do.

Exile on Main Street -- Rolling Stones

The fact that a bunch of young drunk british kids were able to create a pitch perfect honky tonk, blues album is a little hard to understand. It is so much unlike their earlier and later music, I figure that some strange mystical musical demons came down to posess them for awhile. Although every song here is a classic, they are aren't very poppy, which is why you will hear "Sympathy for the Devil" ten times for every one "Sweet Black Angel" on the radio. These songs are always the first to be transferred to any new computer or music player I buy.

Kind of Blue -- Miles Davis

This album's greatness has never really been up for debate. It has always been on the top album lists since it came out. In fact, its presence is almost hackneyed. But the music is not. It is smooth and original all the way through. Even non-jazz fans find plenty here to like. Sadly, I haven't been able to find any copy that doesn't have the extra "retake" tacked on to the end. Hearing two different versions of the same song in a row kills the orignal flow of this 5 song masterpiece.

Paranoid -- Black Sabbath www.amazon.com

This album is shockingly good. I don't count myself among the biggest fans of heavy metal, but I could listen to this anytime. From full on metal to listful instrumentals, its tight all the way through. The namesake track is pure metal-pop gold. What's even more remarkable to me is how old it is (1971). It makes sense that American hard rock bands like Guns n' Roses and Metallica were all hitting their prime in the late 1980s -- it means they all grew up listening to this.
